Columbus Day Celebration at Union Station

Oct 09, 2006 Following message is from Cy Alba State Deputy:

Brothers: This year’s Columbus Day Celebration at Union Station will be something special and you are invited to participate. WE NEED THE HELP OF COUNCIL MEMBERS.

Columbus Day is this weekend. On Monday, October 9, there will be the annual Columbus Day ceremony at Columbus Plaza in front of Union Station in Washington, DC.

While this event is predominantly supported by Assemblies in the Northern Virginia area. (and they have all been contacted.) I am sending this to all Districts and Councils in Virginia so they are aware of the ceremony in the event they can support it.

This event always needs the help of our members in regalia to assist as flag bearers and as dignitary escorts while many wreaths are presented by various organizations. As the State Deputy of Virginia, I will lay one of the wreaths.

However, this is a special year. At the request of the Supreme Council, we will be presenting replicas of the 27 official flags of the United States. If you have never seen this before, it is a tremendous display. The flags are being provided by the Honor America Corp based out of Rappahannock Assembly in Fredericksburg.

So, in addition to the Honor Guards for the wreath carriers and the Color Corps for the 16 Columbus Flags - WE NEED 27 MORE FLAG BEARERS. The ceremonial procedure will also be supplied by the Honor America Corps. While DC and Maryland will help with manpower, I would like to see our Virginia SIR KNIGHTS well represented carrying our US flags.

The success of this ceremony will be reported to the Supreme Knight and the Supreme Master. The hope is to gain Supreme's approval for an order-wide Flag Ceremony with these historic flags. Calvert Province, of which we are a part, needs to demonstrate just how well it can be done.

On Columbus Day, we must truly be the VISIBLE Knights of Columbus.

I realize that Columbus Day is a workday for many Sir Knights. However, if you have the day off, or can take the day off, it would really be appreciated if you could be present at Union Station in Full Regalia.

[6292 Members contact Bill Weich]. Once you have feedback from your members, please advise District Marshal Tom Trudeau and cc me as to how many members you expect to have in regalia. Tom's e-mail is trudeau7369@yahoo.com.

Either Tom, the District Master, Richie Head, or I can answer any questions you may have.

Also, please remember that all Knights and their families are invited to attend even if they are unable to be in regalia in order to show the Knights of Columbus presence.

Report time is no later than 9:30 AM for a walk through. The Music Prelude begins at 10:45 AM and the Official Program begins at 11:00 AM.

In conclusion, please join the District Master and me in DC on October 9th. Thanks for your help and thanks for your support of this event.

If you can participate in the Color Corps or as a Flag Bearer please contact either Tom Kelley at (703) 385-2819.
